The objective of this research is to find a cost effectivernnutrient that will stimulate the growth of in-situ microbes inrnCaltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) oil fields to create sufficientrnbiological products to plug high-permeability reservoir thiefrnzones. If successful, injection fluids may be diverted intornunswept regions of the reservoir, increasing the sweeprnefficiency and extending the production life of watered-out oilrnfields. This paper describes how a wide range of nutrientsrnwere researched and tested in the laboratory to achieve thernobjective. The primary findings of this study show thatrnseveral nutrients were successful at creating bioproducts atrnhigh temperature, low salinity, reservoir conditions, and thatrnmolasses may be the most cost effective nutrient for all threernCPI waterflooded reservoirs tested: Balam South, Bangko, andrnMinas fields. As a result of this work, laboratory studies werernstarted to see to if the microbial growth created in laboratoryrntest tubes can be recreated within reservoir core plugs tornachieve sufficient permeability reduction to justify fieldrntrial(s). The core flood process and techniques will bernpresented in a separate paper.
