This paper summarizes the conceptual development, reservoirrnsimulation, and field testing of a new miscible EOR recoveryrntechnique at Prudhoe Bay. Two distinct variations of thisrntechnique have been evaluated.rnThe vertical Miscible Injectant Stimulation Treatment (MIST)rnprocess involves completing a production well at the bottomrnof a thick, continuous, watered-out interval. A large slug ofrnmiscible injectant (MI) is injected, followed by a small slug ofrnchase water. The MI sweeps rock not contacted by previousrnMI injection and drives EOR oil to offset producers. It alsorncreates a mobilized oil bank in the vicinity of the productionrnwell. The well can then be recompleted at the top of thernreservoir and returned to production service, or used for somernother purpose.rnIt is particularly advantageous to utilize this vertical drivernprocess in conjunction with horizontal wellbores. In the lateralrnMIST process, a horizontal lateral is drilled along the base ofrnthe reservoir from either a production or injection well. MI isrninjected sequentially into several intervals along the lateral tornmobilize EOR oil from previously unswept areas. The lateralrnwell is then returned to normal production or injection service.rnSimulation data indicate that the vertical MIST process couldrnrecover over 200 Mstb of incremental oil per well at initialrnrates of up to 1000 stb/D. Calculations for the lateral MISTrnprocess indicate potential recovery of more than a millionrnbarrels of incremental EOR per lateral.rnField results of the MIST process have been mixed, but overallrnare encouraging. Incremental EOR response from the firstrnMIST lateral well is currently about 1400 Mstb, resulting in arntechnical and economic success. Response from threernsubsequent MIST lateral injectors varied widely. The firstrnvertical well MIST showed little response, but it did providernvaluable insight into the performance of the process atrnPrudhoe Bay. The subsequent vertical well MIST, which had arnmuch larger volume of injected MI, was very successful andrnhas currently recovered over 600 Mstb. Cumulativernincremental EOR from the MIST wells through July, 2000, isrnover 5000 Mstb, with average incremental oil production ratesrnover the past four years of about 4000 stb/D.
