Well productivity or injectivity can be significantly affected by damage to the reservoir section of a well due to reaction between the formation and the introduced fluids. Most reservoirs in the mid-continent region of the United States have varying amounts of illite (and mixed layer illite/smecctitie) and kaolinite clays. These non-swelling clays are susceptible to migration thus causign permeability loss due to plugging of pore throats. When abundant amounts of these clays are identified by petrographic techniques, water sensitivity is usually proposed as a potential problem in the reservoir.
