The low production rates of high viscosity crudes associatedrnwith wells in the Kern County California area lead torndifficulty in achieving production enhancement through costeffectivernwell stimulation practices. The tight economics alsornlead to difficulty in finding a stimulation technique that can berneffectively applied to injection wells associated with thesernsame fields. Following the successful application of waterfracturingrnto increase the injectivity of a water injector well inrnthe Edison Field, water-fracturing was introduced to the TejonrnOil Field near Bakersfield California in hopes of providingrnstimulation to an oil well. Previous gel fracs in the Tejon OilrnField proved to be uneconomical due to high treatment costsrnassociated with increased equipment requirements, combinedrnwith poor results.rnThis paper describes how a small-scale water-fracrntreatment provided productivity improvements from 6 bopd torninitial rates of 30 - 50 bopd and sustained rates exceeding 20rnbopd for one well in the Tejon Oil Field. Comparison isrnprovided of the water-frac well performance over its first yearrnof production to a gel-frac in the same well, and two offsetrnopenhole completions (one gravel packed and one non-gravelrnpacked). The surface pumping equipment requirements for arntreatment of this type are described, as are the procedures usedrnto obtain a successful treatment. The paper concludes with arndiscussion of the geologic conditions that likely led to thernsuccessful result achieved here, and suggests otherrnapplications where this technique should be attempted.
