After 40 years of service, the steel bridge over the Vistula river in Kiezmark (national road no 7) was under reconstruction. The main reason for the works was to lift up its carrying capacity to level "A", according to the current load code. During the reconstruction large, not acceptable by the code, web deformations of the main girders were found in all the spans of the bridge. These deformations were recognized as initial defects. Several numerical analyses were done in order to find out the influence of the initial imperfections on the capacity of the structure. FEM models with large deformations and plasticity were developed using SOFiSTiK FEM system. (On the basis of the presented work, Road Administration decided to leave the deformed parts of the structure in the unaltered state and continue the reconstruction.
