This paper reports on preliminary results from an ongoing comprehensive study addressing torsional provisions in the building code with the objective of arriving at a clearer understanding of design specifications for buildings with torsional irregularities. One such issue is related to the requirement that necessitates a linear dynamic analysis when structural irregularities are identified. The question is whether the seismic behavior of the structure can be adequately determined by a linear analysis. In an attempt to address this issue, a systematic study a group of buildings, classified as torsionally irregular structures in IBC 2000, is undertaken. Detailed nonlinear static, linear dynamic and nonlinear dynamic analyses are carried out to investigate the effectiveness of pushover and linear dynamic procedures to predict seismic demands and overall behavior of torsionally irregular buildings. Preliminary findings from the first phase of the study suggest that demand estimates can vary from one method to another particularly with increasing nonlinearity.
