摘要

The design and construction of structural steel buildings can be a complex, challenging process, the success of which depends greatly upon effective communication and collaboration between members of the design and construction teams. Since 1924, the Code of Standard Practice for Structural Steel Buildings (CSP) has been produced by AISC with the purpose of defining the trade practices which are commonly accepted standards of custom and usage in the fabrication and erection of structural steel buildings (Section 1.1). As such, it is relevant to owners, architects, structural engineers, general contractors, construction managers, fabricators, detailers, erectors-everyone associated with construction in structural steel. In April of this year, AISC released the 2005 Code of Standard Practice, which adds a number of important changes and updates. It is the result of the deliberations of a balanced CSP committee, comprised of structural engineers, fabricators, erectors, detailers, architects, inspectors, a general contractor and an attorney. The Code is updated by the Committee periodically to reflect the changes and growth in steel building industry practices. This paper reviews the significant changes and additions to the Code of Standard Practice which include: 1. Clarification of the intent of the code relative to a professional standard of care and the contractual responsibilities of the structural engineer. 2. New requirements for the shop and erection drawing review process. 3. Introduction of new provisions which define a standard of practice for "Requests for Information" (RFI's). The paper expands on these important new CSP provisions and presents a thorough, detailed commentary on the RFI process with the intent of defining good practice on the use of RFI's. 4. Introduction of new provisions on structural steel material identification, including requirements for both standard shop materials and special material identification for ASTM supplements. 5. New requirements for tolerances on shop fabricated and field assembled trusses. 6. New commentary on the requirement for structural engineers to identify the lateral force resisting system in the contract documents. 7. A new appendix with provisions where the use of a three dimensional digital building product model replaces contract drawings and becomes the primary means of designing, representing, and exchanging structural steel data for the project.
