Watson Hall, a symbolic structure on the campus of Orange Coast College is a four-story reinforced concrete building that was constructed in the mid 1960's. As with most concrete buildings designed in California before 1976, the building's moment frame does not possess the ductility required to survive the displacements induced by large earthquakes. The lateral reinforcement is not anchored within the confined core and the shear capacity of columns and joints is typically less than the shear corresponding to the development of maximum moment in the columns. Nonlinear analyses confirmed that the existing building will not provide life safety protection to occupants during the Design Earthquake and needs to be rehabilitated. A retrofit design by prior consultants, which added new shear walls and involved extensive work to the foundations, was rejected because it was too expensive. Thus, a new design that improves the building's seismic performance and conforms to the project's budgetary constraints needed to be developed. The design team selected a retrofit scheme that utilizes chevron braces to reduce the earthquake-induced displacements to acceptable levels. Fiber reinforced polymers were also used to improve the shear capacity and ductility of the columns. Three types of brace schemes were studied -conventional braces, buckling reduced braces and braces with viscous dampers. This paper compares the approaches to the design of the various options and describes the advantages and challenges associated with each scheme.
