Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe existing problem areas in the manufacturing and erecting of variable message signs (VMS) on cantilever truss units. VMS are electronic message boards that are rectangular in shape and weigh between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds. The structures that were inspected for this paper are part of the Route 80 Magic Project and the Traffic Signal Contract #25 (Route 37). !0
