This paper is addressed to the examination of current application of nonlinear analysis, regarding two-dimensional steel-framed structures, following the main guidelines of the "Advanced Analysis Concept". The subject is discussed according to the Brazilian context, taking into account the fact that the national code for steel building design and erection (NBR-8800, 1986) is now under revision. An inelastic 2D beam-column element has been implemented for the analyzes of framed structures. The element stiffness formulation is based on the stability functions approach. A set of tangent modulus originated from the EUROCODE-3 buckling curves is presented. A computer program was developed and it can be used to predict accurately the inelastic behavior up to the collapse mode of frame structures. The inclusion of refined elastic-plastic analysis and semi-rigid connections for steel frame design is outlined and it is taken as a new step for Brazilian structural researchers and designers. Results coming from a portal frame structure are presented and commented. The obtained results take into account the new trends of the Brazilian code, in the light of the specifications of the AISC-LRFD and EUROCODE-3.
