The paper is a commentary on a few of the outstanding needs for research in structural stability and the application of the results. The need for a deeper understanding of the stability of complete, three dimensional systems and the further development of methods of design is stressed. First, the considerable accomplishments of the SSRC over its sixty year life are acknowledged. The research climate at the time of its founding and the expectations of the founders are recalled and compared with present conditions. Areas of research in which, in the author's opinion, much remains to be done and the ways they are being addressed are then discussed. Included are methods of analysis, flexural torsional instability, local buckling and cross section distortion, earthquake engineering, systems reliability, experimentation, and design standards.
