An experimental program has been carried out to determine the axial capacity of deep cold-formed Z sections. These sections are currently being used by the metal building industry as strut purlins to carry wind loads from the endwalls to the rod-bracing system. The axial capacities of these members may be controlled by any of local, distortional and global buckling. The local and distortional buckling modes can lead to a substantial reduction in the load-bearing capacity of these members. The current trend towards deeper, more slender sections makes this problem even more critical. The current criteria for calculating the axial load capacity of cold-formed Z section strut purlins is based upon experimental studies conducted with sections up to 10 inches deep and 25 feet long while this experimental study consisted of purlins 12 and 14 inches deep and 30 to 40 feet long. The experimental results from full-scale testing of roof systems were compared to the theoretical capacities of the current AISI Specification (AISI-North American Specification 2002) and the Direct Strength Method. For the case of strut purlins without lateral bracing, it was found that both the current AISI design method and the Direct Strength Method are conservative for sections with depths greater than 10 inches. For the case of strut purlins with lateral bracing it was found that both the AISI and Direct Strength methods are highly unconservative for sections deeper than 10 inches.
