A new lower temperature process, called CarbOxLT (which stands for Carbon Oxidation at Low Temperatures and pronounced Car-Box-Lite), is being developed for the regeneration of spent sugar decolorization activated carbon. This paper explores the current understanding of the CarbOxLT phenomenon. In particular, this regeneration option is evaluated against "high-temperature reactivation", which is the dominant practice in the sugar industry today. A previous paper discusses issues relevant to the application of granular activated carbon in the sugar refining industries. That paper includes in-depth discussions on evaluating the performance of recycled adsorbents, a review of analytical methods for measuring adsorption properties and the evolution of activated carbon properties during initial activation and reactivation. Those discussions augment the topics presented here and are summarized herein to establish the basis for proposed conclusions. As such, the papers compliment each other and the motivated reader is urged to review both documents. This paper first reviews the current understanding of high-temperature reactivation technology and Administrator Page 1 8/14/2004the thermodynamics of adsorption, followed by an analysis of the low-temperature regeneration process. The scope of the piloting operations at the Okeelanta Refinery and the results of those studies are summarized. Finally, the energy requirements and capital costs of low-temperature regeneration and high-temperature reactivation are briefly discussed.
