Modeling and Simulation Applied in Modernization of Energy Production Plants

The present work presents a methodology that has been developed and successfully applied to support the information requirements of engineers in charge of the operation, modernization, and/or maintenance of energy production plants (power, oil and gas). Commercial CAD software systems have been utilized to create comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) virtual models of facilities such as off-shore oil platforms and electrical power plants. Then, several software tools and routines were developed to extract dimensional information, automatically generate detailed drawings and diagrams, and create simulations of critical maneuvers. This paper will be of interest to owner or operator companies running either offshore or onshore plants, as it gives several ideas and good practices to reduce time, costs and personnel effort by having not only "digital 3D copies" of the real locations, but also all their engineering information readily available at any location. The paper focus on the time and money saved by: making better decisions and accurately calculating maintenance or renovation costs of equipment, piping or systems; planning and undertaking modifications to the structures, etc. The article also gives emphasis on the reduction of risks and improvements achieved in the safety of personnel by avoiding costly and sometimes dangerous trips to the real plants, and also when executing maintenance or modifications jobs when the plant is in operation. The paper also briefly describes the different stages of the modeling process.
