A membrane electrolysis cell can be employed to recover chlorine from aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid. An oxygen-depolarized cathode can reduce the cell voltage provided a stable and active catalyst can be incorporated into a gas diffusion electrode (GDE). We report here on the progress in developing a new carbon supported mixed metal/metal oxide of rhodium for use as a cathode catalyst in the oxygen-depolarized cathode.
