Production of Fe-Cr-C-base foam: theoretical considerations and practical fabrication

The present study aimed at the manufacturing of an Fe-Cr-C-base foam by nucleation of nitrogen pores into the alloy upon solidification. A composition presenting a suitable solubility gap between the austenite and the liquid phase was derived, based on calculated solubility curves. The solubility of nitrogen into liquid and austenite phases of Fe-base alloys was calculated by using an expression based on Wagner's interaction parameters. The equilibrium constant K and the interaction parameters of various alloying elements have been retrieved from previous experimental studies. The composition of the alloy was also tailored in order to generate precipitation of primary carbide particles, intended to control the growth of gas pores in the solidifying melt and prevent bubble coalescence. The feasibility of this process was proven by producing small amounts of Fe-Cr-C-base foam after dissolution of chromium nitride into the melt and subsequent solidification. The structure obtained and the role of the carbide particles were studied by microscopy.
