The continuously growing market for light-weight components made of expandable polypropylene (EPP) particle foams as well as the simultaneous commercial driving force to further reduce the manufacturing costs of such components require an optimisation of the particle fusion technology. A detailed analysis of the process parameters and the consumed media such as compressed air, steam, and coolant allows a determination of potential cost savings during the component manufacturing. Based on such a detailed analysis a significant reduction of the coolant and steam consumption for the fusion of EPP particle foam blocks with an increased thickness of 500 mm has been realised.
