Various types of thermoplastics are foamed commercially in the plastics industry. Besides physical foaming with gases or low boiling liquids chemical foaming can be done by decomposition of substances, which liberate gases. Chemical foaming agents are widely used in extrusion and injection molding and act as active nucleating agents in direct gassing processes. Apart from these standard processes, chemical foaming agents can be used in special applications like rotational molding or blow molding.
