Acrylate (MeAA) was in situ prepared in chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) matrix through neutralization of hydroxide (oxide) and acrylic acid (AA) during mixing. The obtained compounds were vulcanized with dicumyl peroxide (DCP). The in situ preparation and polymerization of MeAA were characterized and confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The water-swelling properties and mechanical properties of the CPE/MeAA vulcanizates were studied. The results showed that the in situ formed MeAA could improve the mechanical properties and the water-swelling properties of the CPE/MeAA vulcanizates, providing a new approach to preparation of water-swelling rubber.
