"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." Oscar Wilde said that. Problem is, these days none of us can see the stars.rnI was lying on the roof of my apartment building, stretched flat on my back, staring at the sky. Actually, I was staring at the inside of a pair of VR glasses that simulated the night sky in AD 1207. It wasn't a perfect simulation, since there was no horizon line, but VR glasses aren't good at that sort of thing anyway. I'd written the program myself, but I had no way of knowing whether I'd got the quality of the blackness right, or the twinkle of the stars. The holoroom version was better, but with the glasses I could lie on the roof and not have to simulate the being-outdoors-at-night part of things. Add in earbits playing wind-in-the-trees and insect chirps and it was almost real. But almost real still isn't really real.
