Arising from the controlled placement of building blocks, natural materials achieve a wide range of performance from a narrow range of macromolecular repeating units, — the essence of nanoscience. By fractionating plant-based materials into constitutive polymer components and reassembling them with a biomimetic approach, it is possible to create a "wood-like" material from many sources of biomass. Toward this goal we have demonstrated the formation of unique nanoscale architectures from layer-by-layer assembly of cellulose nanowhiskers.
