Although discovered as early as 1949, cellulose nanocrystals did not receive much attention until 1992, when their colloidal suspensions unexpectedly showed liquid crystalline properties. The immense strength and stiffness of cellulose crystallites soon spurred interest in their potential to reinforce polymers. In the age of nanotechnology, could this ancient polymer experience a comeback? The paper reviews the history of cellulose nanocrystals, from their discovery until today. The properties of these emerging nanoparticles are described and potential applications are discussed.
