Renewed interest over the last decade in chip quality has seen several US companies implement or upgrade their quality programs. Most followed similar pathways with improvement activities based around better sampling techniques tied to yield-based evaluations of the impact of chip distribution changes. Significant gains have been made towards the supply of an ideal chip distribution to the pulp mill. Reliable and accurate quantification of the actual pulp yield improvements remains elusive and most programs must rely on an indirect approach to show gains. Acceptance of this methodology can define the sustainability of the chip quality program. Assessment of chip quality typically focuses on chip size distribution and bark content with other quality parameters seldom quantified as their relationship with pulp quality is less well understood.
