Laboratory investigations and field applications havernproved steam drive to be an effective enhanced oil recoveryrnmethod for reservoirs of moderate and heavy oil viscosity.rnThis experimental study was undertaken to investigate,rncombine and compare the performance and productivity ofrnwater, steam, alkaline steam, surfactant steam, and surfactantrnalkaline steam floods through vertical and horizontal wells.rnTo achieve the objectives of the study, two experimentalrnmodels (vertical and horizontal) are designed and built.rnIdentical porous media, reservoir fluids (crude oil andrnformation water), steam, chemicals, and injection/productionrnconditions are used and/or applied.rnThe results of the study showed that horizontal wellsrnare better candidates for waterflooding than vertical ones,rnwhen the same pore volume of water are injected in thernreservoir. Steam and chemical steam (alkaline steam,rnsurfactant steam, and surfactant alkaline steam) floodsrnrecovered more oil when applied through horizontal wells thanrnthrough vertical ones. In addition, chemical steam floodsrnrecover more oil than conventional steam drive for bothrnapplications of vertical and horizontal wells. The increment ofrnoil recovery due to application of horizontal wells instead ofrnvertical ones may be 10.27 % IOIP for steam flood and almostrn17.7 % IOIP for surfactant alkaline steam flood.rnThe displacement efficiency of oil recovery throughrnhorizontal wells is higher than that through vertical wells forrnsteam flood by almost 25 %, for alkaline steam flood byrnalmost 33 %, for surfactant steam flood by almost 37 %, andrnfor surfactant alkaline steam flood by almost 48 %. Thernproposed techniques of chemical steam floods have importantrnimplications for improving oil recovery from current waterrnflood and steam projects, since they combine the advantagesrnof both chemical and thermal recovery methods.
