The existing research station at the South Pole is reaching the end of its useful life due to growth, changes in polar research, and the harsh environment. The challenges include designing foundations on a compressing snowfield with an estimated overall settlement of 1 meter in 50 years, and designing a system to jack the entire facility during the three month Antarctic summer while maintaining full operation of the facility.
