This paper considers the use of e-technology in the markets where safety is of primary consideration. The paper considers the attitudes of both the developer and sponsor of such systems, the benefits realised and the risk introduced by their use. For ease of writing Ⅰ refer throughout the paper to three terms: 1. Safety Significant Industry - any area of industry where safety is of primary importance. Obvious examples would be rail, aerospace, nuclear and process industries. 2. e-Business - the integration of systems, processes, organisations, value chains and entire markets using Internet-based and related technologies and concepts. 3. e-Technology - any technology employed in e-Business systems. Typically Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) based products, for instance web browser technology.
