Following traumatic or iatrogenic damage to peripheral nerves or after the excision of primitive neoplasms, reconstructive surgical procedures are required. In clinic, grafting with a segment of autologous nerve is effective in such situations, but has drawbacks such as donor site morbidity and incomplete recovery of function. Recent approaches have been developed in which nerve conduit may be used to replace the need for nerve grafting. Conduits create a protective environment at the jury site by resisting the mechanical action from the surrounding tissues, containing soluble factors that promote regeneration, and directing nerve growth between the nerve stumps. In the present study, we fabricated peripheral nerve conduits with absorbable material polyglactin (PGLA) using the 2-D braiding technology. We investigated the mechanical properties of PGLA conduit, and the effects of the process parameters such as braiding pattern and braiding angle on its mechanical properties.
