This work presents a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP)-based scheme for energy-efficient multistage adsorption dryer design within product temperature and moisture constraints.The aim is to select the most efficient adsorbent per-stage and product-air flow configuration while optimizing temperatures and flows.Superstructure models consisting of various adsorbents are developed and optimized for a two-stage system.The optimal configuration uses zeolite and silica-gel as the first- and second-stage adsorbents respectively with counter-current flow between the drying air and product.Compared to conventional two-stage dryers under similar operating conditions,specific energy consumption is reduced by up to 60%.
