This paper aims to analyze the forced convective drying of handmade recycled paper dyed with natural extracts derived from the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa) and the cochineal insect (Dactylopius coccus).This research intends to find new uses to waste paper,besides alternative uses to natural dyes produced in Brazil,creating new products that can be produced by small cooperatives of paper recycling.The source of cellulose fibers for the manufacture of recycled paper was printed used paper (A4 size).The flotation system was carried out to remove toner ink particles of the pulp by adding of ethanol and hydrogen peroxide.Besides these reagents,cassava starch and carboxymethyl cellulose were added to improve physical and mechanical properties of the paper,and natural dyes have also been added.Different formulations of cellulose pulp using natural extracts were evaluated.These pulps were characterized by the length of the cellulose fibers using the techniques of optical microscopy and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and the concentration of solids in the pulp by the gravimetric method.The drying of the paper was carried out in a convective dryer under drying controlled conditions such as temperature (70 oC,80 oC and 90 oC) and velocity of drying air (0,3 m/s,0,5 m/s and 0,7 m/s),according to a two-factor central factorial design of experiments.The drying curves obtained were analyzed and fitted to mathematical models of Fick,Page,Page modified (considering the nonlinear Fick effect),Henderson and Pabis (Fick’s modified equation) and Midilli’s model.The empirical kinetic models represented well the experimental data.
