Characterizing Foreign Object Damage in Ti-6Al-4V for Aerospace Applications

When Foreign Object Damage (F.O.D.) is detected in-service, the current maintenance procedures consist of removing any visible surface damage based on the maintenance engineer’s judgement. Once the visible damage is removed, the structure is deemed repaired and ready for operation. Using a gas-gun in the lab to launch F.O.D. representative projectiles at a test specimen created impact damage in line with what is found in-service in regards to impact angles and velocities. This investigation found that varying degrees of subsurface damage (i.e. micro-cracking, grain deformation, structural defects) were found to be created at all impact angles and velocities which would not be removed with the currently accepted repair procedure of grinding.
