A three-dimensional discrete element method based on cuboid particles has been developed and implemented into a computer program for the numerical analysis of an assembly of clay particles. Simplified methods of quantifying interparticle forces (mechanical, double-layer repulsive and van der Waals attractive forces) have been developed. Efficient search algorithms have been employed. The computer program has been used to simulate one-dimensional compression of kaolinite clay and the results presented and discussed, The results indicate the validity of the method, and provide valuable macroscopic and microscopic results concerning the behavior of clays.
