SCIAMACHY (the Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Cartography) is a Dutch-German-Belgian spectrometer due to be launched on board ESA's Envisat satellite on the 1st of March 2002. SCIAMACHY will allow global retrieval of greenhouse gases (CH_4, CO_2, N_2O, O_3) and precursor gases (CO, NO_2, CH_2O) with good precision, especially above land. This shows great promise for use of SCIAMACHY data in inverse modelling of surface emissions.
