The decision support system MITERRA-DSS was developed to quantify the effects of measures to mitigate carbon dioxide (CO_2), nitrous oxide (N_2O) and methane (CH_4) emissions from agriculture in The Netherlands. Effects of management measures and policies on greenhouse gas emissions and emissions of ammonia (NH_3) and NO_X and N leaching have been analyzed. The results indicate clear potentials to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, but some measures increase NH_3 and NO_X emissions and N leaching. Decision support systems such as MITERRA-DSS are helpful to optimize mitigation strategies for greenhouse gas emissions, taking into account agricultural and economical constraints and constraints arising from other environmental issues.
