This paper takes a fresh look at semi-active stiffness control as a means of reducing the response of building structures subjected to strong earthquake and wind loads. It is shown that timed dynamic interaction between different structural elements can be an effective, low power, and reliable means of response control. Examples are given of building structures subjected to both near-field and far-field earthquake ground motions. Practical issues such as actuator time delays are also considered. A possible extension of active interaction control using DC motor and power electronics technologies is also presented. The goal of this paper is to generate greater understanding of and interest in active interaction control as a potentially effective and efficient means of response control for civil structures.
