Buildings provide the physical foundation for a society's wealth and quality of life. Vibration problems of buildings mainly arise from seismic loadings due to earthquakes and strong winds due to typhoons. Effective vibration control of buildings is desired so that the living safety and comfort will be improved. In this paper, a double-ended magnetorheological (MR) damper for a prototype building is designed and manufactured. The developed MR damper is tested and the behavior of the MR damper is characterized. A dynamic phenomenological model is adopted to describe the MR damper behavior. Then the MR damper is integrated with a prototype building to develop a structural control system. Multi-voltage control is implemented to show the feasibility of vibration control of a building using a controlled MR damper.
