A number of manufacturing processes require the time intensive process of tuning servomechanisms. The amount of time invested in tuning is compounded by multiple machines in various locations. In this paper, a method to automate the tuning process is presented with the use of a high-precision measurement machine as an example.rnAn accurate plant model of a servomechanism determined previously by system identification is used in collaboration with an actual machine controller structure to determine the necessary controller gains that achieve the desired performance of the system. These gains are calculated deterministically by obtaining the closed-loop transfer function of the combined machine controller and a servomotor system and using the method of pole placement. The dominant poles are placed in a location that yields the desired system response. It is demonstrated how this entire procedure canrnautomated to virtually eliminate the time burden of manual tuning.
