Canning Dam is a 70 m high, 355 m long curved concrete gravity structure with an ogee-shaped spillway of 109 m length. It is located on the Canning River approximately 34 km south east of Perth in Western Australia. Constructed between 1933 and 1940, the dam impounds a maximum storage of 90.4 million m~3 and is a primary peaking water-supply source for Perth. Canning Dam is categorised as an "extreme hazard" structure as the implications of failure are significant with a population at risk in excess of 100 000. A comprehensive dam safety review undertaken in 1996 concluded that the existing dam does not possess adequate margins of safety with respect to strength and stability required according to modern standards. In addition, the studies confirmed that the dam was suffering from alkali aggregate reactivity (AAR). A thorough investigation of crack mapping revealed the existence of a predominant crack pattern following construction lift joints. Subsequent Option studies for strengthening the dam concluded that the installation of high-capacity post-tensioned anchors as the best means of strengthening the dam. The maximum capacity anchor used consists of 91 extra high tensile strength strands of 15.2mm in diameter: The anchor minimum breaking load (MBL) is 23 751 kN. To the best of the Authors' knowledge, these anchors to be used in Canning Dam are the largest capacity permanent ground anchors ever used worldwide in this type of application.
