In this paper, we present the design, modeling, and preliminary experiments of a precision, millimeter-scale high speed 3D scanner that is to be integrated at the distal end of an endomicroscope. The scanner system consists of (1) an active Silicon optical platform which constraints, aligns, and actuates the small optics (a GRIN lens and a prism) at low speeds and (2) a high speed fiber resonator. The scanner resides within a 7mm tube and is designed to operate at 700Hz, 1 Hz, and 0.02 Hz for X, θ_x, and Z (optical) axis respectively. This will allow the focused laser to travel 100 μm for all three axes. This tight functional requirement is necessary due to the miniaturized optics and reasonable frame rate. The decoupled three axis of actuation is made possible by an optical design which incorporates a double clad photonic bandgap fiber.
