This paper discusses the application of the higher order sliding mode control (HSMC) to a direct drive system to achieve the so called precision-limit positioning (PLP). By PLP it means that the positioning precision is equal to the limit that is allowed by the system hardware. In this study, a newly developed friction model is used to design the integral gain embedded in the control. Experiment shows that the HSMC system, with a little modification, can really achieve the performance of PLP with expected good robustness as different loads are added. However, the final stage tuning and some other defects still need to be improved.
