With the proliferation of both unmanned air and unmanned ground vehicles onto the battlefield, therninevitable next step is the integration of these assets to allow simultaneous and coordinated control ofrnunmanned air and ground assets. The applications for this kind of cross-domain control are as numerousrnas the application of coordinated operations of manned elements across the domains- and perhaps evenrnmore so.rnThe use of standards such as STANAG 4586 and JAUS are presented as solutions to pre-plannedrnutilization of compliant assets in theatre. However, what is commonly over-looked is the potential thesernstandards have for the opportunistic use of allied assets in theatre, where an asset is available that hasrnnot been integrated across the various systems but- because of its use of these standards- there exists anrnopportunity for shared utilization that is less than the full set of features for the system but is sufficient tornsupport the war fighter’s immediate needs. Scenarios will be described and explored that demonstraternhow such opportunistic interoperability can be realized.
