We demonstrate the development of novel hydrogel materials by controlling the crosslink density. A pH-responsive hydrogel with a crosslink density gradient, created by laminar flow and diffusion, showed asymmetric swelling during volume transition. Hydrogels with cleavable crosslinkers have also been designed and fabricated inside microfluidic channels. Upon exposure to reagents that can chemically cleave such crosslinkers, the de-crosslinked hydrogels dissolve completely, making them promising as sacrificial structures and sensors for microfluidics.
