The ‘Standard Test Method for Impact Resistance of Rigid PVC Building Products’,rnASTM D 4226, is very well known to processors and testing labs alike. The typicalrn‘Drop Dart’ tester is a very basic piece of equipment that is very critical to processors inrnevaluating whether their end product meets a standard criteria for impact strength. Therernhave been studies in the past looking at ways to improve the precision and repeatabilityrnof this test. However, this project looked at the test from a different, but no lessrnimportant point of view; Safety. A review of our testing procedure revealed problemrnareas such as repetitive lifting of the hammer, and the potential for pinch and impactrninjuries to the operator's hands. Our Safety review team felt this made the test risky,rnslow, and labor-intensive. A team of engineers from the Systems Automation grouprnwithin Rohm and Haas put together an automated version of this equipment, which isrnmuch safer and more efficient than the old one.
