This paper aims to provide insight for the reader into the undervalued importance of weather tight, watertight and NBCW airtight seals found commonly aboard all vessels but with particular importance to navy vessels. Periodic inspection and preventative maintenance to these seals is critical to a warships operational performance, but traditional means of testing these seals are insufficient. Ultrasonic testing of seals is presented as a viable alternative, providing the highest level of sensitivity and accuracy to potential leak sites as well as convenience. Looking ahead, this paper reviews the merits of continuous ultrasonic monitoring of seals and the significant advantages it could bring to the marine industry.
