CALIBRATION OF MECHANISTIC MODELS FOR ESTIMATING SEDIMENT LOSSES DURING BUCKET DREDGING OPERATIONS

The modeling of the total suspended solids (TSS) that are resuspended as a result of bucket dredging operation requires accurate estimations of the sediment loss rates during the specific phases of dredging. Borrowman (2001) provides the framework for a dynamic, three-dimensional water quality model to this end, however the specifics of sediment loss rate calibration were not directly addressed. Methods for the determination of all of the required parameters for the dynamic source strength model are developed in this paper. These parameters are discussed with specific regard to a study performed in Boston Harbor (1999). The data acquired from that study were used for preliminary calibration of the dynamic source model, and model results were compared to field TSS measurements. An adequate agreement was observed between model results and the field data. The information regarding field data, as well as the quantity of samples, was limited, leaving recommendations of increased sampling and parameter measurement for total model validation.
