摘要

In physical modelling (centrifuge tests, calibration chambers, laboratory tests), the size of the soil particles may not be negligible when compared to the dimensions of the models. Size effects may disturb the response of the models, and the experimental data obtained on these cannot be extended to true scale conditions. Different tests have been performed to study and quantify the size effects that may happen in shear interfaces between soils and structures: modified shear box tests, pull-out tests of plates and cylindrical rods in a centrifuge model or in a modified triaxial cell, torsional tests of piles in a centrifuge model. Results show that there are no significant size effects on the maximum mobilised shear stress at the interface if the model dimensions are larger than about 100 times the mean grain size. The effects on displacement at peak shear strength are less clear and more investigations are needed on this aspect of the grain size effects.
