The precision casting process is an attractive alternative to the conventional forging and machining route particularly for parts of intricate geometry. The manufacturing cost saving potential is especially pronounced for expensive materials like titanium. For the forging and machining route, it is easily possible to modify the microstructure towards control of the mechanical properties by thermomechanical treatment, which can be incorporated into the processing route. For net shape cast parts, these possibilities are limited to purely thermal treatments. Recently, a so-called bi-lamellar heat treatment was developed to improve the properties of cast parts. This paper focuses on the integration of this heat treatment into the standard precision casting process, particularly addressing the weld repair step during the manufacturing process of a cast part of titanium.
