Over 40 years of water flooding drainage, the sandstone reservoir in the northern songliao basin has very high water cut in the production. In order to improve the displacement efficiency of water flooding in the reservoir, the reason must be found out that causes the differences of the recovery efficiencies within the sand layer as well as among them before any measure should be taken. The petrograph-ic image analysis (PIA) system is used to delineate pore texture of the sandstone under study. Through image analysis, five kinds of pore-texture parameters have been chosen to describe pore-texture changes in the sands, pore-area value before E-D cycle (P_(a_0)), pore-area value after the E-D cycle 2(P_a_2)), feret diameter of pores after the E-D cycle 4 (F4), medium-sized pore area (M_(pa)) and large-sized pore area (L_(pa)). 1597 core-plug samples and their petrophysical data in the well B-45 and the well B-51 have been used in statistical analysis. Very high correlation coefficient values between the recovery efficiencies and pore-texture parameters of the sands reveal that pore-texture changes control the recovery efficiencies by water flooding within sands as well as among the sands in certain water flooding pattern area.
