Himalaya being geo-tectonically alive is highly vulnerable to slope instability and mass movement.Besides population growth, rapid urbanization and resultant land use intensifications have increased susceptibility of anthropogenic modified slopes to recurrent landslides.Moreover, climate change has increased frequency and severity of landslides through disruption of hydrological systems.This is posing serious threat to human life and property and increasing vulnerability of large population, particularly poor and marginalized communities to food insecurity through substantial decrease in production, availability and access to food.In the absence of an update database of natural, socioeconomic, infrastructural and communication parameters, real time assessment of landslide disaster damage and management of its risks has not been possible so far.A comprehensive landslide risk reduction information support system was evolved using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) at micro level, with a case illustration of Lake Region in Uttarakhand Himalaya.The study also included capacity building programmes for local government departments through demonstration and imparting training courses from time to time in making use of landslide risk reduction support system and constitution of village level Disaster Management Committees (DMCs).
