This document describes the ongoing work carried out by EPAT, a group of women who believe that the only solution to the production of garbage is recycling. EPAT demonstrates that the proper use of trash materials like plastic, cardboard, metal, paper, glass and manure, reduces the menace caused to the environment and society. In 1992 EPAT founded the Solid Waste Recycling Centre of Tejalpa (RCTEX) where they work daily as volunteers sorting household waste. It is located in a poor area of an industrial city, where more than 60 tons of various materials are collected per year. EPAT sends these materials to various industries, which produce products, which in turn lead this centre to economic sustainability. Also, EPAT has educational and research activities on recyclable materials, making experiments with various plastics. EPAT have just started a recycled-plastic factory where they produce bottle caps with a plastic injection machine financed by the state government and collaborating NGO′s. This waste recycling initiative brings sustainable economic benefits and energy savings. This paper describes their organization and emphasizes the social, environmental, economic and energy benefits of the EPAT project. This organization could be a model to be reproduced in other poor suburban and urban areas in many cities of the world.
