An agronomic evaluation of camelina and solin for the Maritime Provinces of Canada.

Worldwide, oilseed demand is steadily expanding. This assessed the novel oilseed crops camelina (Camelina sativa) and solin (Linum usitatissimum) in the Maritime Provinces of Canada. Evaluations of cultivar, seeding rate, seeding date, seeder type and applied N were performed at Truro, NS, Harrington, PEI and Hartland, NB, in order to determine optimum management practices. The camelina cultivar "Calena" performed best; all three solin cultivars were equally successful. Out of the five N rates tested, camelina and solin performed best at 100 kg ha-1 and 80 kg ha -1, respectively. Optimum seeding date for camelina depended on site. Seeding rates in the range of 400 to 600 seeds m-2 resulted in the most favorable development of camelina. Camelina seeded with a forage type seeder had better establishment compared to that seeded with a seed drill. Results of the study provide convincing evidence of the agronomic suitability of camelina and solin to the Maritime Provinces.
